Whispers of the Trickster

15 minute Immersive Theatre Experience

Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre, Osoyoos BC

Whispers of the Trickster is an immersive theatre experience created for the Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre, in partnership with Panther Creative Ltd. and IX Labs. The project is deeply rooted in syilx/Okanagan community, culture, and ways of knowing. Nk’Mip serves both as a gathering place for our people and as a place of learning for visitors, inviting them to understand the syilx as the stewards of this land since time immemorial, and to engage with the stories that continue to live here.

Role & Contributions:

  • Co-wrote the script and screenplay with Jenna Bower, grounded in syilx captíkʷɬ and developed through community consultation with Elders and knowledge keepers, ensuring the story was shaped with care, responsibility, and cultural integrity.

  • Assisted with character design, supporting the visual development of the Animal People as beings in relation rather than simply animals, reflecting syilx understandings carried through story.

  • Designed the adornments worn by the Animal People, using regalia and land based materials to communicate identity, role, and presence, reinforcing their depiction as Animal People rather than animals alone.

  • Assisted with environment design, contributing to both the on-screen plant life and landscapes depicted in the film, as well as the floor projection design, helping to create an immersive space that reflects syilx relationships to land.

  • Designed original pictographs integrated throughout the theatre space, including the interior and exterior doors as audiences enter and exit, and the exterior theatre signage that visually introduces the story and themes of the film.

  • Assisted in creating the community collage sequence at the end of the film, using current and archival photographs to share teachings about Okanagan history, relationships with horses and salmon, language, and community futures.
